A spankin’ new brand for Hilton Whistler’s fine dining restaurant. The concept reinforces the exceptional food and service promise that is the Hilton hallmark, and adds a modern flair with cool fonts and colour schemes. The restaurant’s interior images were not strong, so we opted instead to focus on food photography which worked out quite well. The client is thrilled.

Working on an article for the new issue of Xpat on amputees in Afghanistan. Beautifully written and hauntingly photographed. It’s an honor to be selected as the designer for this one. Stay tuned for layouts.

The first ad debuts in the May 2007 issue of Decline magazine … it would be a shame to ruin the surprise so for now just keep tabs on www.crankworx.com … the new site launches April 1.

Continuing with the concept of playing off trail names in the Whistler MTB Park, here’s an idea for the run called “Devils Club”.

The past month has been spent on major foundation work… concept development, research, proposals, estimates, quotes… and last but not least… creative resuscitation through gallery visits & skiing. Productive, but not much eye candy to show. That’s all about to change in the next 6 weeks with lots of cool new clients and projects coming online. Here’s one of 6 t-shirt concepts I’m working on for the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

More Beauty from Xpat

February 6, 2007

These guys keep my soul alive. Here’s a sample of a 4-page spread on Taiwanese Opera for the “Beauty” issue out next month.

I continue to crave creative expression by designing editorial layouts for Xpat Magazine in Taiwan. The theme for January’s issue is ‘Beauty’ and I’m thrilled to be working on a feature article about street artist, Derek Mehaffy of Ottawa, Canada. Inspired by urban decay and lost, abandoned spaces, Derek’s work relies on the spontaneity of found objects. His artwork can be found in dark, dusty corners of Berlin, Tapei, Dublin and Paris. See more samples at: www.flickr.com/photos/other/. My next article for this issue is a story on the history of Taiwanese Opera. Quite a juxtaposition, but equally beautiful. Stay tuned.

The client has resurrected a previous logo concept, which I LOVE. A few small tweaks were made to “gender neutralize” our young reader, and the whole package was sent off to the Province of BC for approval. This inaugural award for Early Literacy in BC is set to launch in this March. Thanks to the BC Achievement Foundation and Turner-Riggs Workspace, both of whom are a designer’s dream client.
